Happy Leap Day!

Every four years, we get have an extra day on February 29th which is known as Leap Day. Did you know the reason behind this is that it actually takes the Earth 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes, and 16 seconds to fully rotate the sun? Instead of tacking on extra hours every year onto one day, it became custom to simply add these hours into one single day every four years. This extra "leap" day helps keep the calendar in check, so the seasons don't slowly get shifted.

Here are some more interesting Leap Day facts, make sure to share them with your kids!

1. Sweden celebrated February 30th once
Sweden decided in 1700 to switch from the Gregorian calendar to the Julian calendar, and planned to do so by getting rid of the concept of Leap Days for forty years. Unfortunately for them, they got into the Great Northern War and the plans were forgotten. The time in Sweden go so askew, they had to add another extra day to sort things out!

2. Women do the Proposing!
Leap Day is traditionally the one day where women are expected to do the proposing of men. If the man turns the proposer down he is supposed to give her cash or clothing. This hardly seems like a fair trade off for proposal of spending a lifetime together, but when something is a fifth-century Irish tradition, (which was originally made because it was actually ILLEGAL for women to propose to men at that time) you don't really expect it to be up to date.

3. Beating the Odds
Though there is only a one in 1,461 chance of being born on a Leap Day, Sir James Milne Wilson beat even great odds by being born on a leap day AND dieing on one! How strange would it have been if he had also be proposed to on a leap day?

4. Fear for the Field
Long ago, farmers were worried that leap years would negatively affect their crop and make their animals ill. An old saying from Scotland warned "leap year was never a good sheep year." Another myth was that babies born on leap days would be exceptionally unruly, wild, and difficult to raise.

Take some time and share with your children these interesting facts. Make the most of your extra day and spend it with family and friends. Any occasion to be festive is fun!

Creative Solutions to Rainy Day Blues

We've all had those days, full of rain and glum. It can be even worse when you're a child full of energy, wanting to go outside and play.

So why not take those days and make them fun and invigorating for your kids? Stimulating action-packed games don't have to take place outdoors, and with these easy tips, they won't cause a mess inside either.

Thematic Dramatics
Help your kids organize a play or production of some sort. Have them decide if they want to use a story that is already written, or if they want to create a new and original work. Then help them pick a place for a stage, decorate it, and then rehearse!

The creative process will be exciting and involving at the same time. When they are ready, gather the whole family, pop some popcorn and have them perform for all to see.

You can have your children be your assistants in making tasty treats such as banana pudding with wafers, vegetarian mini pizzas, cake batter & sprinkle bark, and cheesy spinach calzones. (Recipe included below!)

Cheesy Spinach Calzones

Ingredients:
Dough: 1/4 of whole wheat pizza dough recipe

Spinach mixture:

325g spinach, chopped
1 small onion, diced
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
Freshly grated nutmeg
100g extra firm tofu, grated
100g low fat mozzarella, grated
1 cup cottage cheese
1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat your oven to 500F
In a non-stick skillet, cook salt, pepper, and onion over medium heat until translucent. Lower the heat a bit, then throw in spinach and stir until it is totally wilted, about 1 minute. Turn off the heat and set aside.
In a mixing bowl, add cottage cheese, tofu, mozzarella, egg and nutmeg and mix until well combined.
Remove excess liquid from spinach and fold into cheese mixture. Mix until well combined. Set aside.
Divide dough ball in 2 equal pieces and roll or stretch each piece into a 6-8 inch disc. I like to use cornmeal when rolling and stretching my dough as it tends to get trapped into the dough and adds a nice little crunch.
Mound half of the spinach mixture on the center of each of the discs. Flatten it just a bit with a spoon, bringing the mixture more towards one side of the disc.
Fold the dough back onto itself and press lightly on the calzone to form a half moon.
Fold the edges, twice if possible, to seal in the filling.
Transfer to a pizza pan or cookie sheet and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes, until the crust turns crispy, nice and golden brown.
Serve however, wherever and whenever you prefer!

Games galore!

There are many indoor games that can provide an outlet for pent-up energy. Try playing an exercise video in the playroom if they are extra enthusiastic. This can be a creative way to have a good time, while also promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.

You can also have a game of "Scavenger Hunt Hide and Seek." To play, come up with a series of clues and write them down on small slips of paper. For each clue, your kids will have a round of hide and seek, each time finding you. The clues will be hints to where you are hiding. At the end you can provide some sort of tasty treat or maybe a small toy as their "treasure."

Other fun games include themed charades, duck-duck goose, and you could even play games like Twister as easy go-to activities.

Just because the weather isn't optimal, does not mean there has to be a shortage of fun, in fact the opposite could be true for your family.

Soon your kids will actually want it to rain with all of these creative solutions!

Take the Stress out of Valentines Day

Tomorrow is Valentines day, a holiday that at times get a bad wrap for being consumerist and out-dated. However, it can also be a fun way to show your family and friends how much you care about them, and you don't even have to spend money!

Simple (and free!) ways to show the people who matter that you care:

1. Homemade is always better...
Take a few minutes and construct a homemade Valentines card. You can use recycled wrapping paper, magazine clippings, or draw. Taking the time to make a card by hand shows that you want to go that extra mile and create something that is truly original, instead of simply rushing out to the store and picking something last minute that is impersonal.

2. Shout it from the roof tops!
Well, you don't have to go that far, but taking the time to simply let the people you care about in your life know how much they mean to you will put a smile on their face. You can never tell someone that they matter to you too much, so let them know.

3. Embellish and nourish
Adding small personal touches to Valentines meals can make them fun and festive. Instead of a regular pizza, you could cut the slices into hearts. Instructions:

Mix together 1 part water and 1 part glue.
Cover glass in lighter colored tissue paper, paint over glue and water mix lightly, only a little is needed until jar is covered.
Cut darker colored tissue into varying sized hearts. Arrange around jar in whatever order you want, painting them with glue and water mixture.
Once the jar has dried, go over with one final coat of glue and water mixture.
Place candle inside, and tada!

So, what ARE you going to do with all of those toys?

Older toddlers benefit from play time with other children and learning how to share and cooperate. They will act out their feelings, listen and talk to playmates, and follow rules. They will try leading and following. They will start to understand themselves and others.

Toddlers also enjoy climbing, running, and jumping. They are interested in doing things with their hands and developing coordination skills. Toys should be simple and teach basic coordination.
